The wait times for Trek’s gravel bike the Trek Checkpoint is insane. I have asked two to three different shops now and all of them have quoted me at least December 2020. I tried looking on the second hand market through Facebook but nothing is being sold in my size. An event due in July 2020 was my target date in getting a gravel specific bike but I knew I had next to no hope in getting one or at least the one I wanted. A couple of weeks before the event, a Trek Crockett 5 2020 was posted for sale on Bicycle Market in my size 52, there were quite a few interest, a few people commenting and tagging their mates. From there my obsessive research began…
Burralow Fire Trail
Took the Trek Crockett on another gravel ride, this time to Crago Observatory near Bowen and took the Burralow firetrail with the intention of riding to Bilpin and back again. I think it’s fair to say that our expectations when it comes to gravel riding needs to be adjusted. Gravel rides are not quite the same as a normal road ride, expect to go much much slower and there’s no such thing as a short ride. This is even more apparent when you’re trying out a track for the first time. Unless you do your proper homework and know every technical segments and descents, expect the unexpected and know your limits.
Richmond Lowlands
There are so many unexplored roads in Sydney that in four years of cycling I still haven’t checked out. Richmond Lowlands is one of these places that is tucked away, it is tucked away in the North West near Freemans Reach. It is a tiny town mainly consisting of cattle farms, turf farms & the odd corn fields. I found this route from Chris Miller on YouTube which is great because he has been venturing out west quite a lot lately.
Gravel Ride – Emonda SLR
I wrote about gravel riding almost 12 months ago and have wanted to get an Trek Checkpoint ALR, unfortunately the bike gods have not been kind to me and since then I had a crash, broke my collarbone and a few ribs. I was out of work for about 10 weeks and was left pondering whether I’d be riding my bike again. Luckily for me, I had a Project One Madone on order so I had no choice but to get back on. Let’s fast forward to 2020 and in this Covid19 pandemic, the M7 cycling path has been busier than we’ve ever seen, new cyclists, old cyclists, children and runners have flocked to the M7 shared path for a bit of exercise which is great to see.
Siklista Custom Kit
Like any decent small but decent cycling group, we’ve dreamt about designing and owning our own custom cycling kits. Unfortunately we don’t have the budget or funding to match our champagne taste. The very first Siklista kit was quite a simple design that was manufactured in China and I only had three jerseys made which is a shame.
Crashed!!!
A week ago from today I suffered my first major crash on a bicycle. I’ve been cycling now for three years and I have had near misses as well as low speed tumbles but nothing like this. The list of injuries sounds horrific – broken clavicle, eight fractured ribs, trauma to the heart and head, not to mention a broken a front tooth. I was knocked unconscious when my bike suffered a mechanical issue during a training ride with Dante near the Rooty Hill exit, the cause of the crash was due to the chain jumping off the pulleys which resulted in me losing balance during the sprint and deviating into Dante’s line on my right.
We were both knocked unconscious as we fell heavily onto the path at approximately 50 km/h, this section of the cycle way is a fast section and is often used as a 200 metre sprint section before the bollards. There was footage from the crash on my fly6 but I haven’t seen the full video as I haven’t been able to pick up my bike and inspect it. I know exactly what caused the crash but I want to gather the data from my Garmin computer and overlay it on the video to see how it happened before coming to a conclusion.
Thanks to a couple of good samaritans who found us and rendered assistance, we were able to get immediate medical help from the paramedics and was brought to the Emergency Department. I was in hospital for five days and Dante was discharged overnight with minor injuries.
New Cycling Journey – Gravel
We’ve been on hundreds of rides and handful of epic rides in the last three years, now is the time explore a bit of off road and take on a new journey.
I’m talking about gravel riding. A year ago I created a route to the north west region and had to make changes due to our bikes not being suited to the terrain.
This year I want to explore those areas and find out what this region has to offer. Exciting times and I’m really looking forward to it.
At the moment I don’t have a gravel bike, I have an climbing bike – Emonda SLR – and an aero bike (Mdaone SLR) which is on order. I’ve owned a few bikes and quite comfortable on a Trek so that’s what I’ve been looking at. The new Trek Checkpoint looks like a winner. The Checkpoint ALR starts from around $1499 and goes up to $4699 for their top of the line SL6 which is a carbon frame.
I’m calling around the Trek shops I know and see if they have any floor stock in size 52. Doesn’t look like they hold these bikes in stock, size 52 won’t be in for another 2 months.
